ChemFORWARD Applauds Apple, Target, and Sephora for Safe-Chemistry Leadership
ChemFORWARD applauds Toxic-Free Future’s fifth Retailer Report Card, highlighting the great work by leaders in safer chemistry including the report card’s two A+ grades, earned by ChemFORWARD Co-design Partners Apple Inc., and Target Corp., along with Sephora, with an A grade representing the list’s biggest improvement over time.
ChemFORWARD is pleased to support the goals of Toxic-Free Future’s Mind the Store campaign as we pursue the common vision of safe products and the development of safer chemicals. We are delighted to offer a tool that helps retailers and suppliers identify and select safer alternatives in pursuit of this goal and we are eager to help retailers earn the report card’s new extra-credit points for assessing ingredients through ChemFORWARD’s platform.
“Apple, Target, Sephora, and all of the companies working to accelerate equity, offer safer products and deliver more transparency are true leaders in a marketplace increasingly recognizing the importance of sustainability and fairness,” said Stacy Glass, ChemFORWARD’s executive director. “We are proud to support these companies and anyone who wants to examine the safety of their products using verified chemical hazard assessments and find safer alternatives to hazardous ingredients.”
This year’s report card also adds topics that are critical to making progress in using safer chemistry to promote equity, including the issue of hazardous chemicals in beauty products that are marketed to women of color. New criteria in the report challenges retailers to address racial justice and we are excited to see the progress that this accountability prompts.
Target was specifically identified in the report as taking meaningful new action to address racial injustice and health inequity by committing to screen beauty products marketed to women of color for toxic chemicals.
The report found the beauty and personal care sector to have among the greatest gains of any retail sector. ChemFORWARD is pleased to offer industry-specific collections of chemical hazard assessments and verified safer alternatives. These portfolios – including one tailored for beauty and personal care innovators – are presented in an easy, intuitive and affordable format for companies ready to offer safer products.
The national Mind the Store campaign, a program of Toxic-Free Future, challenges big retailers to eliminate toxic chemicals and replace them with safer alternatives. The campaign publishes the annual retailer report card that benchmarks and scores major retailers on their safer chemicals policies and implementation programs. www.mindthestore.org and www.retailerreportcard.org
